Privacy Policy

In short: what you save in Capture is yours. We do not sell it, we do not use it for advertising, and we will never use it to train AI models. We do not look at your private content unless you ask us to.Capture (“Capture”, “we”, “us” and “our”) gives you one place to save notes, links, code, photos and files and to find them on all your devices. This Privacy Policy is designed to help you understand how we collect, use and share your personal information, and to help you exercise the privacy rights available to you.

Scope

This Privacy Policy covers the personal information we collect about you when you use our products or services or otherwise interact with us, including on our website and in our apps for iPhone, iPad and Mac (collectively, the “Service”). It also explains the choices you have about how your information is used, and how you can access or delete it.

Personal information we collect

We collect personal information when you provide it to us and when you use the Service, as described below.

A. Information you provide to us

Account creation. When you create an account, we collect a username and a password. Passwords are stored in hashed form. We do not ask for your email address, phone number or legal name.

Your content. We store the content you save to the Service, such as notes, links, code, photos, files and audio recordings, together with related details such as titles, file names, folders and dates (“User Content”).

Your communications with us. When you contact us for support or with a request, we collect your email address and the contents of your message, along with anything else you choose to provide.

B. Information collected automatically

Device information. When you sign in, we record details of the device you are using, such as its name, model, operating system, browser and app version, and when it was last active. This lets you see and manage the devices signed in to your account.

Usage data. On our website we collect aggregated information about visits and the features that are used. This is done without cookies and without identifying individual visitors, and it never includes your User Content, your searches or what you share. Our apps for iPhone, iPad and Mac do not collect usage data.

Security data. When a share code is entered, we record the IP address of the request for up to 24 hours to protect against abuse.

How we use your information

We use your personal information to:

  • provide the Service, including storing your User Content and keeping it in sync across your devices;
  • authenticate you and keep your account secure;
  • create previews of what you save, for example by retrieving the title and image of a link;
  • respond to your questions and requests for support;
  • measure interest in the Service, and develop and improve it;
  • detect and prevent abuse and prohibited or illegal activity;
  • enforce our Terms of Use; and
  • comply with our legal obligations.

Aggregated information. We may use information about how the Service is used to create aggregated, de-identified statistics. This information does not identify you, and we use it only for internal analysis.

AI and machine learning: what we don’t do. We do not use your personal information or your User Content to train, fine-tune or improve any artificial intelligence or machine learning model.

Disclosing your information to third parties

We do not sell your personal information. We share it only in the following circumstances:

Service providers. We share information with third-party service providers that help us operate the Service, such as providers of hosting, data storage and analytics. They may use the information only to provide their services to us.

Sharing at your direction. When you share an item using a share code or link, anyone who has that code or link can view the item until it expires.

Complying with law. We may disclose information to satisfy applicable laws or regulations, or in response to legal process or enforceable government requests, and where necessary to protect the rights, safety and security of our users and the Service.

International data transfers

Information processed by us may be transferred, processed and stored in countries other than the one where you live, which may have different data protection laws. We endeavour to safeguard your information consistent with the requirements of applicable laws.

Your choices

Usage data. You can turn off the collection of usage data for your browser at any time in Settings › About.

Devices. You can review the devices signed in to your account and sign any of them out in Settings › Devices.

Your content. You can delete anything you have saved at any time.

Your privacy rights

You have the right to:

  • request access to, or a copy of, your personal information; and
  • request deletion of your personal information, including your account.

Data retention

We store the personal information we receive for as long as you use the Service, or as necessary to fulfil the purposes for which it was collected and to comply with applicable laws. When you delete an item, it is removed from our servers. When your account is deleted, the information associated with it is deleted as well.

Security of your information

We take steps to ensure that your information is treated securely and in accordance with this Privacy Policy. Your information is encrypted in transit and at rest, and your User Content is private to your account unless you choose to share it. Unfortunately, no system is completely secure, and we cannot guarantee the security of any information you provide to us.

If we learn of a security breach that affects you, we will notify you through the Service.

Third-party websites

The Service lets you save and open links to other websites, and may display content from them, such as previews. These websites are not controlled by us, and we are not responsible for their content or privacy practices. We encourage you to read the privacy policies of the websites you visit.

Children’s information

The Service is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If we learn that we have collected a child’s personal information in violation of applicable law, we will promptly delete it and close the account.

Changes to our Privacy Policy

This policy may be amended as new features, technology or legal requirements arise, so please check back from time to time. When we make changes, we will update the date at the top of this page.
